The Newton General Hospital Authority was created in February 1952 to meet the health care needs of Newton County.
The hospital opened on October 18, 1954 with a total of 36 beds. Through the years many additions and changes have occurred including: |

In 1961, thirteen beds and an operating room were added. |

In 1969, thirty-five beds were added along with several ancillary departments. |

In 1971, the six bed Florence Turner Arnold Intensive Care Unit was added. |

In 1984, The Intensive Care Unit was renamed the Robert and Florence Arnold Critical Care Unit. |

In 1984, a major expansion program was completed that brought the hospital to its current total of 90 licensed beds. The change resulted in a new entrance facing Highway 278 as well as a new space for several clinical areas and an addition of the third floor to the hospital. |

In 1987, a new Outpatient Department was completed. |

In 1992, work was completed on
a new Emergency Department, Laboratory Department,
Physical Therapy Department, and Respiratory Therapy
Department. |

In 1993, the expansion and renovation of the Birthcare Center were completed. |

In late 1997, the new 60,000 square feet Medical Office Building, named the Physicians’ Pavilion, was opened. |

In June 2001, the 103,000 square feet Knox Surgical Center opened. This spacious and ultra-modern surgical care facility offers general surgery procedures, an Endoscopy Lab, and pain management services. |

In 2004, Newton General Hospital changed its name to Newton Medical Center |
